Student Discipline Policy

Discipline policy at Jacob’s Hope Academy is based on the scriptures of the Holy Bible:

Suspension and Expulsion: Even with a school-wide Biblical system, it may sometimes be necessary to suspend or expel an individual student. School personnel can suggest suspension or expulsion to control outrageous behavior or to remove a student from exceptionally disturbing, vandalizing or dangerous situations. The principal shall have authority to suspend for a period of 5 days or less any student who willfully violates JHA’s Disciplinary Policies. Although suspended, students will be given an opportunity to take any missed examinations during the suspension period immediately upon return.

Academic Honor: Code Academic integrity is a fundamental value for any educational institution. At JHA, students are expected to honor and uphold this value by acting honestly in every aspect of their academic life, whether in school or studying at home. Violations of academic integrity, such as cheating on tests or copying another student’s homework, are a serious matter. All students are required to uphold the Policies and Procedures under Student Discipline.

Plagiarism: Students are required to provide references when using phrases or statements provided in another authors’ material. It is an academic offense to use someone else’s words in homework assignments and class work assignments and not give credit to whom you are quoting. Plagiarism is taken very seriously at the college level and JHA students must rehearse the righteous acts in preparation for college. If a student needs assistance with writing, he/she 7 should start with asking their teacher, but there are many resources JHA offers to assist with student learning.

Parental Assistance: Parents are strongly encouraged to be leaders by example and reinforce their student(s) educational commitment. Confirmation of homework completion on a daily basis will ensure comprehension of learning materials taught and a successful academic year. Parents are also encouraged to review the student’s homework, and provide suggestions for improvement if necessary.

Student Punctuality and Attendance Policy

Punctuality and attendance are essential aspects of school life. Coming to school on time each day demonstrates respect for the teachers as well as the school and contributes to an orderly learning environment, now and for the future.

Punctuality Policies and Procedures: Attendance is taken every morning at 9:00 am ET sharp. Students who arrive in class late will be marked late. Should a student accumulate six or more tardies in a quarter, his or her grades may be affected and a meeting will follow.

Attendance Policies and Procedures: Regular attendance in all classes is essential to the educational progress of the student and the school. With absences, not only is the educational progress for the absent student at risk, but the educational progress for the group becomes interrupted when teachers are burdened with providing individualized instruction schedules after each absence takes place.

Beginning of Year Attendance: To complete the enrollment process, both new and continuing students must attend class during the first week of the school year. Each student must attend class on the first day of school. If a student does not attend the first day of class, and the principal has not received prior written notice and JHA provided authorization for the absence, the child is at risk of losing his or her enrollment status, and the principal may enroll another child on the school’s waiting list.

Types of Absences: Acceptable absences include illness or injury, death in the immediate family, medical or dental appointments, court or administrative proceedings. The child must complete the enrollment process and attend school before he or she can claim an acceptable absence.

General Attendance Policies and Procedures: If a student is going to be absent, it is the responsibility of the parent to contact the principal’s office prior to the attendance taken for the day. In the event of an absence, students should get assignments from their classmates. Generally, students are given one day to make up assignments for each day absent. If a student is absent six times in a quarter, the principal’s office will contact the parents to inform the current academic deficiency due to attendance. Additionally, students may be at risk of failure due to too many absentees.
